Licensing
We have the proper licensing required by the state and federal government (by state and federal law, anyone who applies fertilizers or pesticides must be licensed through DEM with their Commercial Applicators License). Also by law, all employees who work on underground lawn sprinklers are licensed through the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training with their Irrigator Licenses. In addition, we have two licensed horticulturists on staff.
The whole picture
When choosing a landscape company, you need to look at the whole picture, because pricing is not the only factor. Are they licensed? Are they insured? Better Lawns carries full coverage on all of our equipment, and workers compensation.
Family-owned business
Will they show up when they are supposed to be there? Can you speak to someone on the phone? These are the real issues property owners have with landscape companies. Better Lawns is a family owned business. David Kennedy, the owner, started the company in 1996. We’re there when we are supposed to be there. We return phone calls in a timely fashion.
Meet David Kennedy
Growing up in a large family that included 12 aunts and uncles and 34 first cousins steeped in a family dairy farm which later became a golf course, David veered away from that background to try his hand at the hospitality business. After stints that included working with the 1980 America’s Cup Courageous team, being involved with the Hardee’s NASCAR team, and working with the team that developed the theme structure at the 1982 World’s Fair, David returned to his roots in Rhode Island and founded Better Lawns & Gardens. The company has grown and in addition to servicing private residences, Better Lawns provides landscape projects for industry leaders such as Costco, BJs, Cumberland Farms, Season’s Corner Market (to name just a few) from Maine to Connecticut. David has positioned Better Lawns to provide a personal touch as well as corporate requirements.
Meet Linda Justin
Linda Justin is a horticulturist with twenty years in the green industry. She is a graduate of URI with a B.S. in Environmental Horticulture and is a Rhode Island certified horticulturist.
Her responsibilities include landscape design, plant selection, fine gardening as well as working with the rest of the staff to ensure correct and proper pruning and planting techniques.
Meet Anthony Russo
Anthony is part of our team as a licensed pesticide applicator. He is responsible for all fertilizer, herbicide, fungicide, and pesticide applications throughout the season. He has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to identifying and eliminating invasive grasses and noxious weeds. With Anthony on board, we added important capabilities, such as flea and tick treatment and mosquito control.
